Lura and Ann Lovell
Ann and Lura Lovell
Two of the founding members of the
Bravewell Collaborative, Lura and Ann Lovell joined the
Bravewell Collaborative to become involved with people
who shared their passions and dreams. "It's a chance for
visionary work and an opportunity to leverage our
combined assets to move the entire healthcare system
toward better medicine," explains Lura Lovell, who
serves on the board of directors for Bravewell.
Her daughter, Ann Lovell, who also
serves on the Bravewell board of directors and is the
Treasurer, concurs. "It's exciting to be able to affect
systemic change but this work is also personally
fulfilling. The community that we have created is both
supportive and stimulating. When we meet, it's like a
homecoming."
Both Lura and Ann are Trustees of
The David C and Lura M Lovell Foundation, which was
formed in 1993 after the death of Lura's husband, David.
The mission of the Lovell Foundation includes the
advancement of integrative medicine, especially in the
fields of arthritis and cancer. The mission also focuses
on education about mental illness and specific
initiatives related to housing and job opportunities for
those living with serious, chronic mental illness. Ann
Lovell, who serves as the Lovell Foundation's executive
director, explains that the "Lovell Foundation funds
initiatives in the geographic areas in which Trustees
live, which are currently Tucson, Arizona; Toledo, Ohio;
San Francisco, California; Eugene, Oregon; and the big
island of Hawaii." In 2001, The Lovell Foundation, in
collaboration with philanthropists Lani and Colby Jones,
endowed a Chair in Integrative Rheumatology at the
University of Arizona Medical College.
Ann Lovell is the Founder and
Director of the Valley Foundation, which provides
college scholarships to residents of Southern Arizona.
Ann serves on the advisory Council of the Women's
Foundation of Southern Arizona and is a member of the
boards of Social Venture Partners of Greater Tucson and
the Women's Leadership Board at the John F Kennedy
School of Government at Harvard University.
Lura is a member of the Advisory
Board at the University of Arizona's Arthritis Center, a
Trustee of the Valley Foundation and serves on the Board
of Directors of the Weil Foundation.
Lura and Ann Lovell share a deep
commitment to the field of integrative medicine and in
their work with the Bravewell Collaborative. The Lovell
Foundation supported the Leadership Awards program; the
creation of the PBS Special, The New Medicine; the
Bravewell Fellowship in Integrative Medicine program;
the Mapping Project; the creation of the first
Practice-Based Research Network in Integrative Medicine;
and the upcoming Pioneers of Integrative Medicine
Awards. |
